Larry Russell is the son of the wealthy, "new money" Russell family. He is a recent graduate of Harvard University eager to make his way in the world, and is appealing and good-natured with an easy charm. He is the Achilles' heel of his mother Bertha, and the two love one another deeply. Larry is protective of his sister Gladys, and is a child of the rich like her. He thinks he doesn't care about money, because he's always had plenty of it.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Larry was born to Bertha and George Russell presumably around the year 1860[1]. His sister Gladys was born around the year 1865[2]. The Russells moved to New York in 1859. Larry studied engineering at Harvard University, graduating in 1882, and he moved into his family's newly finished home. [3]
Despite his father having wishes for him to continue his legacy at his business, Russel Consolidated Trust, Larry's goal was to become an architect, and his parents decided to support his endeavour. He studied architecture under Stanford White, who had designed the Russells' house.[4] Larry redesigns to his family's house in Newport, which was finished in 1883. In 1883, he also took on his first formal architecture commission to remodel Susan Blane's house.[5]
Season 1[]
Episode 1[]
After graduating from Harvard, Larry begins to make friends with the young men and women of the "old money" families. He attends a party in Newport, where he is friendly with both Oscar van Rhijn and Carrie Astor. During a chance encounter on the street, he saves Pumpkin, the dog of his neighbor Marian Brook, when he is in the middle of the road and about to be trampled by a horse and carriage. During his mother's first party for their elite neighbors on 61st Street, they receive very few guests, though he and Gladys say hello to Marian when she stops by.[3]
Episode 2[]
Oscar takes Larry to visit his mother's, Agnes van Rhijn's house, against her wishes, when Tom Raikes is also visiting for tea. Agnes treats him politely enough, but is watching in anger when Larry talks with Marian, which Larry jokes about. On a later day, Larry joins his family to visit Anne Morris's charity bazaar. [6]
