Frances Montgomery is the only daughter of Dashiell and Harriet Montgomery. She studies at Saint Mary's in New York. She is also the great-niece of Arnold and Agnes van Rhijn and cousin of Oscar van Rhijn.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Frances was born in 1868 or 1869 to Dashiell and Harriet Montgomery. Her mother when she was very young. Her father is a nephew of the late Arnold van Rhijn. Frances moved from Washington to New York with her father in 1883.
Season 2[]
Episode 1[]
Frances enrolls at St. Mary's, and has a watercolor painting class with Marian Brook as her teacher. Her father's cousin, Aurora Fane, hosts a tea to celebrate Dashiell and Frances's arrival. During the celebration, Frances recognizes Miss Brook, and happily greets her teacher. She is unaware that Miss Brook is the niece of her aunt by marriage, Agnes van Rhijn, and that Agnes is unaware that her niece has started a teaching job.[1]
Episode 2[]
Frances later attends one of her classes at school. She despairs at messing up her art piece, although Miss Brook encourages Frances that she can try again next time, and also reminds her that she is looking for each student's vision, as well as imitating the bowl of fruit.[2]
Episode 4[]
Frances's school is holding a mother-daughter tea party[3], and Marian promises to go there so Frances can also attend. At the tea, Frances's teacher, Mrs. Glenny, mistakes Marian for Frances's mother. Dashiell comes to pick Frances up, and Frances makes a suggestion that the three of them make a rather neat little family. She asks whether Marian isa afraid, and then she tells Marian to come on a carriage with her and Dashiell, instead of walking home.[4]

Dashiel Montgomery[]
Her father. After her mother died when she was very young, Dashiel's been taking care of her by himself, as a result, they have a very close and affectionate relationship between them.
Marian Brook[]
Thry meet in 1883 after Frances and Dashiel moved to New York. Marian became her watercolor teacher at St. Mary's school, and they quickly develop a close relationship. Frances looks up on Marian as a mother figure and is deeply fond of her. Frances really enjoys spending time together off-school and when Marian and Dashiel begin to see each other very often Frances is seen happy and wishes for the three of them becoming a family. That's why when Marian called off the engagement with Dashiel, Frances feels sad because she thinks Marian will no longer be part of her life, but after a conversation she feels relieved when Marian assures they will keep being a family.
