Early life[]

Season 1[]

Dorothy meets with her daughter Peggy upon her return to New York in a location that she appears somewhat uncomfortable with. She is surprised and skeptical about the news that Peggy has been employed as a secretary by Agnes van Rhijn, and cannot return home. Dorothy wants to reconcile with her daughter and put the past behind them, but Peggy does not want to see Arthur again.[1]

Arthur visits Peggy at her new workplace, and she agrees to come home for her mother's birthday.[2] Peggy joins Arthur and Dorothy for lunch, and she reveals that The Globe has agreed to publish one of her short stories, and Dorothy is overjoyed. However, Arthur is skeptical, and encourages Peggy to quit secretarial work and come to work with him in the drugstore. The day is made awkward when Peggy's employer's niece, Marian Brook, shows up at their house uninvited. The family discovers that Marian brought some old boots as a present, clearly thinking that the family lived in poverty, but Dorothy and Marian go along with the cover story of thinking that it was "for a charity." Arthur clearly cannot hide how much he is offended, however. Dorothy invites Marian to join the family for lunch, but Peggy leaves with Marian, although Dorothy invites her to at least stay for the birthday cake. After they are gone, Dorothy berates Arthur for jeopardizing their relationship with Peggy yet again.[3]
