Dashiell Montgomery is a wealthy widower who joins New York society in 1883 after having lived previously in Washington with his only daughter Frances.[1]
His family, the Montgomery family, is considered to be old money and have supported the city's botanical gardens.[2] His mother was born to the equally well-established Van Rhijn family making him a nephew by marriage to Agnes van Rhijn and a first cousin to Oscar van Rhijn and Aurora Fane.

Early life[]
Dashiell was born and raised in New York referring to it his "old hometown". He was married to his wife Harriet, with whom he had a daughter, Frances. He is shown to have a warm relationship with the maternal side of his family, calling on them as soon as he returns to the city.
Season 2[]
Around Easter of 1883, Dashiell decides to move back to New York from Washington with his daughter Frances. He is welcomed to the city by his cousin Aurora Fane with an afternoon tea where he meets Marian Brook.
During a tennis match in Newport, Dashiell rescues Marian from her unwanted suitor Edward Morgan. In the evening, the two dance at Ward McAllister's party.
Eventually, Dashiell proposes to Marian at an afternoon party at the botanical gardens. In the moment, Marian hesitantly accepts his proposal.
When Marian realizes that Dashiell still loves his late wife after he mistakenly refers to her as Harriet, she calls the engagement off.
