Cornelius Eckhard III is an old friend of Ada Brook from their days in Pennsylvania. He is a former beau, and has not seen her since the Civil War threw their lives into chaos, and wishes to reignite their friendship many years later.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Cornelius grew up among respectable society in Pennsylvania, and had a brother and a sister. His family was not particularly wealthy compared to the Brook family at the time. He grew very close to Ada Brook, and they might have married, but her father heard about him bragging about marrying a "meal ticket" in a tavern. Mr. Brook refused to give him permission to marry Ada because of this incident, though he believed that it was simply because he had less money than the Brooks. He remained unmarried.[1]
