Cornelius Eckhard III is an old friend of Ada Brook from their days in Pennsylvania. He is a former beau, and has not seen her since the Civil War threw their lives into chaos, and wishes to reignite their friendship many years later.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Cornelius grew up among respectable society in Pennsylvania, and had a brother and a sister. His family was not particularly wealthy compared to the Brook family at the time. He grew very close to Ada Brook, and they might have married, but her father heard about him bragging about marrying a "meal ticket" in a tavern. Mr. Brook refused to give him permission to marry Ada because of this incident, though he believed that it was simply because he had less money than the Brooks. He remained unmarried and later settled in Connecticut.[1]

Season 1[]

Episode 3[]

Aurora Fane is hosting an event where Clara Barton talks about the Red Cross, where Cornelius attends. He notices Ada, who is there with Marian and nods at her. Marian asks her who Cornelius is but Ada doesn't answer. After the talk, he comes to present himself to them. Ada says she thought it was him. Ada tells Marian that they knew each other when they were young in Pennsylvania. Cornelius tells them that he's mainly attending because Mrs. Morris, who is his niece, told Ada would be present and, he thought they might revive their old friendship. He asks Ada how her sister is doing and and Ada tells him that Agnes married Mr. Van Rhijn almost 40 years ago. Marian proposes that Cornelius must call on them.
