Charlotte attends the Young women's Christian Association benefit, hosted by Aurora Fane at her house. Mrs. Astor sees Charlotte talking with a man called Mr. Barrowe, and tells Carrie to manage her sister. Carrie introduces Charlotte to Gladys Russell. Carrie asks Charlotte if her husband is at the event, and Charlotte tells her not to be ridiculous. They watch by as Billy Carlton tries to go and ask for Gladys's hand, but fails.
