The Gilded Age Wiki

Bruce (portrayed by Celia Keenan-Bolger) is the housekeeper for the Russell family. She comes highly recommended, but is not without something to prove. As a senior member of the house, she is tasked with helping Bertha Russell host social events worthy of New York's elite.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Bruce's parents were farmers. At the age of twelve, her mother put her forward for a job as a maid after seeing an advertisement for the position. She has worked in service ever since. She has never married, although is entitled to the style of "Mrs." in her workplace as a sign of respect toward the position of housekeeper.[1]

Season 1[]

Miss Bruce is hired as a new member of staff when the Russell family moves into their opulent new mansion on 61st Street, as Mrs. Russell appears to believe that the housekeeper at their previous home was not suitable for the ways of "old money" New York, which the family is trying to impress.[2] After the failed At Home party, Mrs. Bruce begins to befriend the chef, Monsieur Baudin, and reminisces about her life in service.[1]
