Archie Baldwin (portrayed by Tom Blyth) is a young investment banker who appeared as a hopeful suitor of Gladys Russell before she had been brought out to society.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Archie was born to a respected New York family, around the year 1858. His grandfather was an ambassador, and his father is a banker, like Archie. His mother's family is said to have come over on the Mayflower, and a forebear on her side was an officer at the battle of Yorktown. His family has a house in Newport. His aunt is Oscar van Rhijn's godmother.[1]

Archie met Gladys at a hotel in 1882, with Gladys's governess Grant escorting her. When Bertha found out about this, she fired Grant.[2]

Season 1[]

Episode 5[]

Archie comes to dinner with the Russell family, hoping to make his intentions of marriage clear to her father, Mr. George Russell. After dinner, Gladys, her brother Larry, and their mother, Mrs. Russell leave Archie and Mr. Russell alone to enjoy a glass of port. Mr. Russell begins to make Archie the offer of becoming a successful broker under the Lehman brothers.

Archie is optimistic at first, but Mr. Russell makes it clear that if he accepts his offer, he is to write one final letter to Gladys and is to never interact with her again, and to end conversation with her as soon as possible if there should be any chance meeting between them. When Archie asks what happens if he refuses, Mr. Russell makes it clear that he shall never work in the financial sector ever again. He meets the rest of the family, and distantly turns away from Gladys, telling her that he will write to her, and departs the Russell mansion at once.[3]
